You've got a point. Although I thought Sai was sort of the intentional anti-Sasuke and maybe he'd stick around on Team 7...getting into everyone's biz and calling them on it, as opposed to Mr. Apathy Uchiha himself. I was also starting to like Sai's character if in fact he is truly concerned with Naruto's well-being. Here's hoping he starts a trend...
