I didn't read through all of these, but something I noticed was the topic of flow. I'm assuming this means the movement the eyes take when viewing an image. On that thought, the first post of this image set didn't have the white spot and the flow you mention appears to be from left to right, as you stated, but when you put the white spot in as shown in the link, the direction the eye moves is from right to left. The point here is that as an artist, you want to move the eye of the viewer around the picture. You don't want to leave the eyes at the center of the frame. Someone mentioned previously, to center your image. As an art student, I've been told many many times that centering an image is as good as boring art. Think about it, if your main area of focus is the center, there's nothing to get you to move your eyes around the image. Take for example the blue image of Yui and your battle for life image here. Yui is placed in the "golden mean" at the upper left quadrant. The BFL one is dead center. As I look at the Yui one, there is a background that has a swirl. This is actually a very good element as my eye is drawn in a figure 8 pattern from her arm, down to the lower right, up around the swirl and down to the breast, then up to the face. In contrast, the BFL one doesn't move my eye at all. I look right in the middle and have to force myself to look around the picture. Some advice: go to an art museum and look at picture from any time or genre and take note of where your eyes travel. Also, as I implied with the Yui picture, direction of eye travel doesn't have to be in a straight line. As with the Yui picture, it has a radial symmetry to it and for some reason, the orange backgrounded one really bothered me. It could be the contrasting colors, but the blue background was more appealing to the eye for me. Of all the ones you've done on here, that I saw anyway, the Yui one is the best because it keeps the eye moving in a pattern and you aren't left wondering where to look next.
Oh, I forgot to mention focal point. Back at the first link, there is the white spot or light source. Whatever it is, when you put that in all focus changed to that white spot and that shifted all movement up and into that point and also doesn't push the eye away. You end up staying in that spot. Focal points are good, but make sure it's the focal point you're going for or the work can be ruined.

also try some shading .... try darkening the sig but put an emphasis on the color at the same time .... while darkening the sig, bring out the colors and set a main focus on the sig .... "isolate" the render by makin it stand out and just add a little faded out detail around it or around the edges ... just enough to make sure that the main focus is on your render ... sigs always need only 1 main focus point
![]() hope this somewhat helps

I'm not sure if I should post this here or start up my own thread. I just wanted to show what I've been working on for the last few days which was spurned by this thread. I don't mind criticism, but as a precursor, I'm a traditional artist, i.e. paint and canvas. This is by no means a great piece, but I am pleased with the energy from the complimentary colors used throughout. I tend to like to create shadows with compliments instead of just darkening the value of the main flesh color. Think about it, all flesh is brown and all colors make brown, so since the picture of Hinata I modeled this one after used a yellow color for her skin, I just went from there.
![]() I've read the word render a lot in this thread. From the looks of it, you just take an existing image of a character that someone else rendered and put a background and such behind it. Is that assessment correct? Anyway, a bit of background on how I came up with this one. I used a couple images from the manga itself as a template and recomposed them after I colored them in. I removed the template after I was pleased with the resulting rendering. I already mentioned the use of complimentary colors. It's obvious that the sky is just a gradient from blue to orange and the clouds are just orange with a transparent erasing to let the sky bleed through to add the massing. For Hinata's skin color I used yellow and purple. The mountains in the background are also blue and orange, just darker than the sky. I debated on how to render her hair and tried a purple/yellow coloring that would look nice if I put effort into it, but since she's so commonly rendered with black/blue hair, I decided to just go with it. It still looks cool and doesn't make her feel like she doesn't belong in the image. One thing about it, in the original file, her hair looks like it was done in pastels which is really cool, but it doesn't translate on this shrunken version as well. Anyway, I chose green for the text because it's midway between blue and orange and the opposite end of the spectrum was pink, so green it is. If I didn't make that contrast it would've blended with the background and wouldn't be readable. As for readability, I know I could use a better font, but this one was the best I had that fits the type of person I envision her to be. Anyway, I know I'm long winded here, but that's my take. I could critique it myself, but what fun would that be? P.S. I don't use photoshop yet. I won't buy it and won't steal it. I use the GIMP. IMO, it works just as well. One of these days I'll learn to use a program like Illustrator and can save svg files and not lose the quality when shrinking the images. Also, what's a c4d? I've seen that thrown around a lot and have no idea what you're all talking about.

O_O
*oh my god* /thinks : "just what is happening to this thread D:" ![]() ----------------------------------------------------- A C4D is a cinema 4D or something like that ... its an abstract image like a render but has no specific form. Random beautiful shapes ... ----------------------------------------------------- Well ... I would like to critique you but ... ! I have no sense of art in itself. But for a sig ... that Hinata one would be rated among the worst. And I remind you am talking about sig and not art piece. Comment if it was a sig : 1. Text is bad 2. Flow is bad (in fact there is no flow) 3. Its rather plain ...

Well, it's not like I think my first time trying this is going to win awards or anything. However, I'm curious as to what is good text? I've seen a lot of people comment on other peoples tags and all I ever see is that the text sucks. I never see anyone say what would be good. As for the flow, I was thinking that the clouds and mountains would draw the eye from the small Hinata to the large one which was the intended flow. As for the plain comment, I must not know the definition of a sig, because the ones that I see that have the character centered and all the noise happening in the background are boring as they have no flow whatsoever, imo. Well, I guess mine is more for artistic value anyway.
BTW, I asked earlier, but is the thing you guys refer to as a render a character that has already been colored, or are you guys adding your own color to the characters? From the looks of most sigs I've seen, it looks like you just take a bunch of pre-colored images, put them together and make use of effects to make them blend together. Is that how sigs are supposed to be done? |

And yes , render a image that have been cut from a picture for other uses. And yea , you think in terms of arts and sigs are just in a whole other realm. Then again , am not a pro in sig making But! Flow in art pieces and flow in sigs are ... different. I don't think am qualified to answer your questions ... :< You should probably ask Useless or Broken . You can find their thread in the uber artist section : http://forum.onemanga.com/forumdisplay.php?f=87
