Conception thread so it's pretty damn incomplete right now.

1. The name is still up to change

GM: Dudeitzmeh
Co-GM: Rogue
Co-GM: Onslaught King

Basic Premise
Spektre is a colony on the planet Gliese 581. The planet was colonized by humans but something went wrong and the colony was abandoned, leaving its inhabitants behind, along with many indigenous inhabitants as well. The colony has only scarce supplies, forcing them into a dog-eat-dog run society.

The planet has now been overrun by "Big" the leader of the ___ Crime Syndicate. At the same time, the sheriff of the town; Alison Elliots is trying to transform the now crime infested planet into a more stabilized government.

--incomplete--
Your Character
Your character somehow ends up on the Spektre colony. Perhaps you were on a ship and crash landed (no one visits a desert land on purpose), or you were already living there. Doesn't really matter to me. I'm still deciding on whether you have to take a side (either "Big's" Crime Syndicate or Alison's law enforcers) or if you can just do whatever you want...might be more organized the first way

The Spektre Colony
The planet is called Gliese 581.
Humans tried to colonize Gliese 581 but it was too cold for their comfort, so after a series of terraforming incidents , they resorted to setting off a nuclear reaction on the red dwarf that is the planet's sun. This caused the planet to heat up rapidly and as a result technology and supernatural abilities are hindered on the planet. Soon after that transport ships began to abandon the planet's first official colony called Spektre, which was left in the middle of a vast desert out of contact with the rest of humanity. Spektre was then overrun by criminals, which is where the story kicks in..

Before terraformation, the planet's highest average temperature was 50 degrees Fahrenheit. After terraformation, the temperature rose dramatically and the hottest recorded temperature was 133 degrees F in Spektre. The average is 80 degrees F today in Spektre, but only because it's evened out in the past few years since the last Transport Ship left the colony.

Though Spektre was the first official colony (people migrated to it after living several years in a makeshift colony fashioned from a Super-Class Transport ship, one of the first that came to Gliese, in fact), there is speculation that other colonies exist. The reason most believe this to be true is that there were terraformation plants set up all around the planet, so someone had to live there to maintain the plants. Though the plants malfunctioned and resulted in the destruction of the environment in their surrounding areas, it is rumored that some escaped to underground caverns that the Mar race built as their homes. Also, the Nomadic race of the Goodies survive around the planet, so this is more reason to believe there are other human colonies alive out there .

It is unknown for certain whether there are any traces left of the lush forests and plains that coated the surface of Gliese at one time, but it is most certainly probable. It's just that Spektre is completely cut off from any remaining colonies or inhabitable lands because of the vast, uncrossable, and dangerous desert that stretches out for hundreds of miles around the colony. Since there is barely any decent transportation it is impossible for a mere human to cross the desert alive. Though many have tried, they have never returned or were heard from since.
There are also underground reservoirs on Gliese. This is where the town's only lake springs from (Lake Sirius). These underground "lakes" are huge cavern-like reserves with tunnels connecting to the surface, and to each other underground. They carry water throughout the planet deep under the ground, and much of the planet's aquatic life now live there.

Spektre has only approximately 500 inhabitants, and Gliese has approximately two million sentient beings spread out across the planet. (These are only estimations. There isn't any real head-count for either the town or the planet.)

Races

The Rhoe: the rhoe appear similar to humans, and sometimes are mistaken for them by people who are unfamiliar with the race. the only differences is that they are all dark of skin, and always have very dark hair, although the color isn't restricted to that of humans. they have pointed ears and abnormally long canines, and it is also a dominant gene to have a protruding, flat nose. their facial hair grows faster than humans, and does not, in fact, grow on the upper lip (they were shocked when they saw the first mustache) and it is rare that they will find the time to shave it everyday. other attributes is them being generally -larger- than humans, being taller with broader shoulders on most occasions. another dominant gene in their heredity seems to be thick, curly hair.

rhoes were discovered along with the continent in the start of it's founding. they lived almost completely in the southern mountain region, living a completely human-like lifestyle, emphasizing on hunting, combat, and scouting. they reluctantly trusted humans, learned their language, and the two races have been living side-by-side without many hitches since then. the rhoes continue to feel closer to their own kind, and often describe humans as 'the evolutionary step below us'. some rhoe are actually rather aggressive towards humans and have formed groups against them, or will start random acts of violence against them

rhoes are proud, hearty people with a reputations for ill-timed and very loud honesty. the race is uninterested in worldly problems, and likes to focus on present matters, seeking immediate solutions in favor of long-term rewards. they are specificly unconcerned about little inconvenience, deeming them ultimately 'unworthy' of their concern, and are very difficult to rattle, contrary to their fierce appearance. their morals and values, are indeed, very simple. they don't waste much time worrying about much of anything at all, again contrary to their furrowed brows, they are the most laid-back and carefree of any race, deprived almost completely of panic and worry. they take terrible news in apathy and disasters in disinterest, giving them the appearance of cold, heartless beings, while this is simply a racial trait.

they do, in fact, act very emotional, especially joviality, love, and competition. they love telling stories, and over get very worked up when telling one, or very involved when hearing one. verbal storytelling is their pastime, and is shared in every family whenever possible. because of this, the race is sick with stories, growing as families do, but only a few are retold exactly as the legends of creation and of their gods, along with ancient heroes and early gilese life, usually all exaggerated with adventures and much bloodshed, to keep the kids paying attention. they are a very romantic race, only ever breeding with their own kind, and the male can spend years courting a woman before she lets him hold her hand. it takes years beyond that before they can be given the permission by the parents to become a couple. being a race of honor and honesty, the men value the women's dignity and frown upon any men who advance too fast in search of pleasure. although, being a race of present living, the time for courting and permission have diminished increasingly.

they love to fight, insisting that scars and blood are signs of good character, and practicing combat is the most rewarding of all recreational activities. they have great respect for anything stronger than them, and have even been known to accept human war heroes as their own. 'you've evolved', they'd say.

The Mar: A group of humanoid people, indigenous to the planet before the humans colonized it. Before the humans arrived, most lived underground. They are notified by their very dark skin (black colored), lanky look, long arms and legs, and large digging claws. They have their own indigenous language (to humans it sounds like the constant clearing of the throat) but they've pretty much all learned english by now. Though they have an accent...it's not too bad, but it always sounds like they have a dry mouth. Though they are passive by nature, many of them have resorted to crime as a result of the discrimination and rejection they felt from human society.

The Kar'en: A group of proud, tribal people that live on the outskirts of Spektre. They are animistic, and have a strong affiliation with the "spirits." While they don't have magical capabilities per-say they have a strong affiliation with nature: no one knows the land better than them. (They are very similar to the Plains Indians). Appearance wise, they tend to have lighter skin than humans, and are categorized by their pointed ears and nose (they pretty much look like elves)

The Goodies:
the goodies are peripatatic nomads, a race with no land to their name who simply live in the wilderness and move around the continent with their herds of googlimunto (a "pigdog") and magooglihoo (a sort of hoofed anteater-looking creature), both of which are the tastiest meat affordable. They are very small and have a mousy appearance (kinda like moogles from Final Fantasy) most all of them are shepherds, but mostly they go from town to town, coutry to country as traders. depending on the tribe, it is usually quite an event when they stroll into town, with many celebrations, and a set-up market where you can buy exotic things from all over. jewlery, clothing, carpets, food, spices, just about anything one could think of, and even more. some tribes have been known to come up with an ancient treasure of unmentionable value seemingly out of nowhere.

that said, the goodies are generally a well-liked race, accepted welcomely even by the most cruel and greedy countries. the tribes themselves are incredibly diverse, ranging from the most famous tribes, bringing notoriously gorgeous items from hidden corners of the continent and making a great festival of their arrival in big kingdoms, celebrating for days on end, to some more dark tribes, whose arrival is noted only on a whisper and are gone within hours.

'noomi tribes' are the most common, and are the ones who sells items such as food and clothing.

'roomi tribes' are special, and spend most of their time only finding the most expensive and important treasures. regarded as treasure hunters by many, they are sought out by only the stupidly rich and the archeologically inspired.

'doomi tribes' are specialized in sneaking around and getting paid for spying, eavesdropping, and other general misdeeds that one might be too cowardly or heavy to do by themselves. these kinds are also known to work for leaders of greedy mobsters by offering rumors and secrets of enemies.

'soomi tribes' are philosophers and thinkers who go from town to town collecting knowledge. they are known to spend months in a town, making maps, studying the plantlife and economy, and having deep philosophical conversations with the citizens, selling their knowledge and help, as well as scrolls and literature they've written. although, it is hard to take them very seriously, as they tend to say, 'goo...' while in deep thought (much like, 'hmm...' ). then there's the 'foomi tribes' who function more like a traveling circus than nomads. they are entertainers, and usually put on shows of all kinds for the people. there are many other tribes, but these are the most common.

no one knows where the goodies came from, or why they don't settle down, but when asked, a goody will simply say that it is not in their nature to stay put. this has been proven many times when a goody is injured and must stay in a hospital as his tribe leaves. even with 2 broken legs, a conscious goody will crawl back to his tribe if not properly restrained. goodies have actually no innate reason to stay with their tribe. either they have family in the tribe, are proud to be in their tribe, could not survive without the tribe, or simply have nothing better to do. all that they know is that it's in their nature to travel, and are known to keep walking on right into death, which afterwards the tribe will burn their corpse and let the ashes go in the winds, so that they may keep traveling forever in the company of their god, suegoo, who is said to be the wind. some people, in no better explanation of the goodies origins, have declared that they were, in fact, sent by the gods to connect the continent and promote it's bounty, as the goodies are surely doing. while some people put stock in this myth, other view them simply as dirty animals and won't make eye contact with them at all.

amoung many traits born into all goodies is wanderlust, colorblind-ness, and an intense fear of water. no goody has ever shown any intrest in ever crossing the ocean, and it is even said they won't take a bath unless the water is dropped onto them, in contrary to having to sit in it.

Their names are very normal, like anyone else, but friends will add '-goo' onto the end of a name, much like the japanese equivalent of adding '-chan' to the end of a name.

The People of Spektre (NPC's)
Will add later.

Looks good so far. Just let me ask some questions to get to clear up some things.

Their are some discrepancies that are nagging at me. You state that Spectre may be the only human colony. At the same time you hint at the existence of others. Yet there are races on the planet that Spectre is in contact with that are spread all about the continent? Seems a bit strange that they wouldn't know of the other colonies. I mean you mention this uncrossable desert, then go on to talk of nomads visiting. Just need to clear this up a bit. Do they have some race of animals that aids them in crossing? Why would they not have taken humans who want to leave Spectre with them?

I'm not trying to criticize, just trying to help you make this promising idea into something more solid. Gotta seal the cracks if you will.

Alright, as for the town itself...
What style of buildings are there? What are they made from?
Level of technology?
Defenses?
Government?
You mention it only having 500 people...yet isn't that kinda small for it to be the home of a large crime syndicate? Up to you, but you may want to make it larger.
What makes the desert uncrossable? The size? Predators? Sandstorms? Supernatural element?

As for the planet itself, would you mind describing it some more? You mention how the different races live here or there, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how it fits as a whole.

The races look nice. Most of them seem very detailed and thought out. Only thing I would add is to make something to help simply it that people can refer to. Make a quick list of dominant traits/features/average heights/weights/personality quirks/ and whatever else so people don't need to search and dig and can gather the information more easily.

As for the topic of stats...thats a tricky one. If your going to have players facing off against players I would advise having some sort of stat system. Once I have a better idea of this world you made I can help out more with this.

Hurp durp durp...alright, let's get crackin on those questions...

As for the reason why the humans don't know of other colonies...I'm open to suggestions. Though I probably won't be moving the RP out of spektre so it's sort of moot anyway. Though I'll try to hink of something >.<

and yeah, the planet has it's own special fauna and flora...I'll try to create a list later.

Building style and technology level...well it's pretty much like Trigun if that helps >_>"

And yeah...what about 2000 people in Spektre?

The planet itself...well Spektre is a desert area, but the rest of the planet's geography is unmapped and thus far "unknown"

The desert is uncrossable because it's pretty big, its got lots of sandstorms, there are some nasty creatures in it, and most people don't want to risk their lives for something like that.

And if you think stats are a good idea, I'm all for them...but I'm horrible at making them xD. If you could help in that regard...

If you don't want their to be other colonies, then don't have them. Have Spectre be the forsaken colony on some backwater world. The delicate circuitry of their more advanced technologies were for the most part destroyed by the rapid change in temperature. And while they do have the knowledge to create more, they lack the materials to do so. They attempted to try and find out if the necessary materials to replicate the lost technology existed on this world, but the natives proves useless in understanding what we meant. Searching parties were sent out, but have yet to hear from them.

I can picture what you mean when you say Trigun style...other people may not.

2000 sounds better.

Even if you say unmapped....they would have gotten a map from before they landed. At least a general layout. Of course you could say things changed when they nuked the sun (not going to lie when I say that seems rather crazy).

I get the desert is dangerous, but then how do these other races cross it to intermingle with Spectre?

As for stats...those types of things I lack in. I'm not good with weapons and stat systems. I actually have a large concept for an assassin rp in space written out then I never did since I couldn't come up with those exact things. You can see part of it in the Rp advertising thread.

Do you want everyone to be gunslingers? Or can they be otherthings?

dudeitzmeh
04-03-2009, 09:10 AM
hmm...yeah I might take out the other colonies...and the nuking of the sun >.<

And all the races exist within spektre, it's just spektre is primarily human. So every other race will be minorities within Spektre.

Hmm...and I guess I could come up with stats myself. Though, I pm'd O.K. for help. t\Things like that seems his forte...

And most people will be gunslingers...though there are pistols, rifles (hunting-ish rifles, not automatic), gatling guns, shotguns, etc. You can also have knives, daggers, dynamite, whatever you want; I just don't want to see "magical" stuff or stuff that is too high-tech.

Hehe...that's the same thing I did too. I think he was busy at the time though, maybe you might have better luck.

Well you should be careful about people trying to get weapons above what your technology will support.

I asked this earlier but you didn't answer...what is their government?

Hmm...I'm curious about where this is going exactly. This whole isolated town thing.

would it make sense for the Mar to have pale skin because in the absence of light skin pigment is not needed since they live underground

Government...hmmmm. Well I'm open to suggestions.

are lightsabers (or somethign alike) to high-tech?^^

Rogue
04-03-2009, 07:29 PM
...that seems extremely high tech to me. Dude says western...you say lightsaber?

Raiden

ah yeah xD so I didnt want a real lightsaber more liek a lightspear :D

No energy weapons. Purely mechanical or steam powered stuff.

Onslaught King
04-03-2009, 11:21 PM
Steam powered stuff huh? Sounds sweet. So you decide whether or not to use some sort of point system? With this format you really don't need too and just leave it up to creativity. But that also depends on what type of challenges your providing such as enemies and obstackles.

dudeitzmeh
04-03-2009, 11:23 PM
I think I'll go with stats...with the type of missions and such the players will be going on, stats might be required >.<"

But...I'm horrible at making good stats. (Looks shiftily at you OK :aww:)

Rogue
04-03-2009, 11:39 PM
Hmm...something just seems off about this. I can't quite place my finger on it though. Maybe its the feeling of small scale. Laying out such a large picture...but were just on a single backwater colony where our actions won't have too much importance.

How large do you plan to have this syndicate? Keep in mind with a town of 2000, even if its as large as 200 that means that every 1 out of 10 people within will belong to it. How strong will they be in comparison to the players? Why would a stranded colony be so focused on infighting rather then trying to get off the planet? For how long have they been abandoned there? If its recently you would assume that a chain of command still exists and the "government" would consist of the higher members in the chain of command. Perhaps an admiral/captain/ what have you.

You could also institute classes of some sort such as Walter is doing over in his new Rp.

Honestly...I feel like someone should go and make a trigun rp.

dudeitzmeh
04-04-2009, 12:43 AM
hmm....well this is still a Conception Thread Rogue. So I'm very open to suggestions. Come up with a good alternative and I'll probably take it into consideration and use it >_>"

And I don't...plan xD. Pretty much everything I do is spontaneous.

Classes might be nice though...what classes would you suggest?

dudeitzmeh
04-04-2009, 07:25 AM
Alright should classes be more like jobs-e.g.
Bounty Hunter
Sheriff
Gangster
Merchant
etc.

or perhaps something more broad like
Gunslinger
Brawler
Naturalist
Merchant
etc.

?

Rogue
04-04-2009, 07:29 AM
If this is going to be just about fighting...I would say they should all be geared towards fighting styles. Gunslinger/Engineers/Sharpshooter/Martial Artist/ Hunter/ so on so forth.
