OneManga Wallpaper Contest

Well, we started one on the old forums, but never really went on. So, we restart! Any entries from the old one can be reused. Here are the rules.

-Must be original work
-Must say One Manga on it
-Must be in the following dimensions: 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1600x1200 (That's all the major ones, right?)
-Must be manga related, and preferably related to a series on OM
-Must be appropriate (no curse words or sexual content, for example)

The entry of the contest is available to all members, including staff, however staff cannot win. The prizes for the winner(s) are:

-Being moved into the Extreme Posters/Contest Winner/Site Contributer group, which allows you a custom title.
-Having your work posted on the main site

There is no end date, but it may be closed any time once we have a good amount of entries. 3 weeks is the approximate amount of time that the contest should take, and you will have that length of time at least.

All entries should be posted in this thread.

x04, a the 4:3 resolution is 1280x960, but the more common resolution used is 1280x1024.

And there are a lot of widescreen resolutions out there now as well, usually 1440x900, 1680x1050 and 1920x1200.

I realize that. Does that mean we can resize for the rest of the sizes, but we have to do something else for the 1280x1024? I guess it shouldn't be too hard, but what I am trying to day is it will be slightly different (the rest of the resolutions are 4:3). Oh yes, my screen is in 1280x800 (also 16:10, as are 1440x900, 1680x1050 and 1920x1200). I just wanted to know if Greg meant that or he made a mistake. If I remember, in the contest on the old forum, Greg pretty much wanted it in the largest resolution and then resized, so I was a little confused, but I'm glad that's cleared up now.

EDIT: I made a 1280x1024 version real quick (to take a look). There was a little clipping, but the gist is the same, so ignore anything I said about it looking too different.

T_T oh well it was a paint thing anyways it didn't really look good but it was fun trying :) it said onemanga in orange lettering... blue and white spray paint around the onemanga ... on the bottom left... no right corner it had a chibi kakashi reading an orange book and on the bottom left corner it had yuuki from vampire knight reading another book :D

pyuuuu i really wanted to post it though... T_T... i thought it was actually pretty cute considering that i don't know how to do anything much on the computer other than playing games... ah well T_T pyuu.... maybe i'll retry just in case... i guess i wanna look at it anyways even though i won't compete in the contest brb i'm going to try again :thumbup:

you also blended in the render, so it's not just slapped on


the lighting is overpowering, and the text is bad though. and its too harsh on the eyes :P

There's nothing wrong with using renders, especially not if they're posted online specifically to be used for the creation of things like wallpapers, etc. If Arctic thinks they are so bad, or something like that (not sure what his specific objection to them is, other than maybe execution of the image) then he should enter so we can have something to compare with. Making sigs is a whole lot different than making wallpapers, IMO.

Arctic, so what style should the text be in then? Also, when you talk about the lighting being overpowering, are you referring to the lens flare near his face that was sharpened? Because that was intentional =P

Rhyssa, i never stated that using renders is bad. i just stated i wish people would do something instead of just slapping them on. greg blended his render in.

and yeah, i meant the sharpened lens flare. if in an image it hurts to look at somewhere for long, then something's not right.


and for text, something simple would work. or maybe try the bleach font.

Don't save it in .gif format. Gif isn't meant for images with large amounts of color or blended areas similar to photographs, that's what jpg and png are for. Gif is meant for images that have a small around of colors and/or solid blocks of color.

I did a quick test in Photoshop using your 800x600 wallpaper.

gif = 313.1k, 112sec @ 28.8Kbps (yeah, no idea why it still has that benchmark...)
jpg = 96.29k, 35s @28.8
png-8 = 298.4k, 107s @ 28.8
png-24 = 580.1k, 207s @ 28.8

These are just examples. All I did was save a copy of your wallpaper, open it in a new photoshop window and then do save for web on it. No settings changed or anything. The jpg setting is definitely the smallest on both size and download speed.

Yeah, my personal opinion is jpg for large art, and png for sigs.

Not bad, Arctic, although the text isn't integrated very well, even with it being in top and bottom bars. The TNR font just doesn't seem to work there, and it's too bland looking. Plus the bottom bar would be partially or completely covered up by the Windows task bar, so the site name/url/tag line isn't being shown to it's fullest. I'd place them on one line, spaced out along the bottom edge to avoid any cutoff. Oh, and I've give the text a slight orange tint, to pull out the hair and blood on Ichigo's arm more. The rest of the image is shades of grey, and those colors would really stand out of the text pushed the focus more. IMO, YMMV.

I've never heard this. It's a common newbie mistake to not balance and integrate your renders properly, but if you know what you're doing, more than one render per image can work out just fine.

That said, I also prefer to use one render/character/item as the focus of the image and emphasize that.

EDIT - gif should really only be used for transparency. Png can do transparency, but not enough people have upgraded to IE7 and/or use FF to have it be practical for use. So really gif is the only option for transparency still.

Well, until i see one sig with multiple renders that can be considered at least semi-pro level i cant say i'll change my opinion on it...

And if it's in gray for you, then i suggest you check your monitor - it's shades of blue-gray for me.

i would make the text more vivid, but that kinda defeats my point on moonlit, and also draws attention away from ichigo (p.s. i think that the amount of color i've used is fine, the orange and red are just accent colors - no need for more, and the text having an orange tint would screw up the color theory of it, since i want it in cool colors.)

I know the windows taskbar goes there, that's why i put the url there - they don't need to see it constantly, since www.onemanga.com isnt too visually appealing. that way they'll know where its from when they download it, but don't need to constantly be reminded.

As for text, i didn't want it to be integrated - the main focus is the middle. i originally had text fitting in in the middle, but decided to remove it and set them on the border.


I also want to point out that i wanted it to be like a scene - ichigo standing alone on a moonlit misty night over a devastated battlefield

Don't worry Greg. I like it! =Ð Anyway I am using GIMP so I probably have disadvantages here..But I might try one!

There's a bit too much going on in there, Greg. Nothing is the focal of the image right now. I'd take the image on the right side and bring it to the forefront more, drop out the other image entirely (or make it barely visible, right now it's almost the same attention value as the other) and move the text to the left. Or make the left figure the focus by bringing it to the front and brightening it up and dropping the right image to the background more.

For the text, the wind effect doesn't really fit, you might want to find some deconstructive fonts online if you don't have any (www.fontfreak.com or www.dafont.com are both excellent sites); those would work better than the wind effect.

EDIT - Herr_Secrets - actually gif is the worst of the commonly used image qualities. And don't even THINK of saving in bmp and using that for anything other than basic images for reference. Bmps are huge and not fun to work with. Jpg is the most common format and is much better quality than gif for images like these. Png-24 would be ideal, but they are still large file sizes and for wallpapers, jpg is just fine.

OK, my 3rd one v2, lol. Apparently the image on the side looked a lot more faded at my working 50% view, so I corrected that. I also changed the font (what the hell was I thinking? :D) and sharpened the render on the right.

I think by original artwork, Greg meant that you can't take someone else's (fan)art and call it your own, or take another artist's wallpaper or significant portions of it) and say you created it. Using manga art, anime screencaps and/or your own (fan)artwork is just fine though.

Actually, renders are nice when you can find ones you want to use. Why go through the effort of cutting the image from it's background if someone's already done it? If there isn't a render that you want to use, then crop away. Using renders is just a bit of a time saver is all. I spend enough time cropping gaming characters/mobs out of their backgrounds for the wallpapers I create over on the Vault Network, if I can find a render where the jobs already done for me... Score!

I was supposed to be Kingdom Hearts. But then I thought, "Final Fantasy's graphics are much better. It'd looks prettier with FF." I know. The wallpaper is pretty simple, but I guess that's what I was aiming for, since I ususally go a little crazy on the brushes. I also wanted it to be soft. You know, not harsh on the eyes or anything.

I'm not even sure if this will be accepted since Final Fantasy is, well...not anime. Or a manga. Ah, well.

People need to realize that not everyone likes the same thing. Saying something like "You guys don't really seem to understand the elements of design at all.. or even general aesthetics.." is a crock because what one person thinks is aesthetic, another person might think is overwrought and overdone. That's shown in my comments about Arctic's submission, since while Moyga seems to feel it's the best one so far, I find areas that could have been done differently. It all depends on the person doing the viewing. It's not all about the effects.

Personally, I got offended by his comments (both sets of them) because if you're going to say something, then either critique or just say it's not your thing. Don't pan everyone just because you personally don't like them, especially not when there are people here who've said this is their first wallpaper they've made. Some of those are really rather well done. And for the record, I make plenty of wallpaper/calendars every month for a gaming network, and judging by the responses I've gotten back (from game devs and the like) apparently I do have "a sense of space and colour and shape and stuff" and "understand design elements'. yeah well, i haven't even seen your one, i just randomly looked at a bunch of them, thats why i said "most" not all so i wasn't even talking about you at all lol, im sure your great so chill out. No need to brag about your various acheivments.
Oh and about the personal taste thing, notice i did use the world "general" asthetic. Aswell as their being idea of "refined taste", of course someone who is experienced with design and the programs is going to look at something differently to someone who isnt because they know how to recognise all the effects and everything thats been done etc
anyway i dont really care, moving on.

So I did get time to make one. And I did have to end up using a Render (because the google images are puny), and it was nice-looking anyways.

The Manga Images belong to Rumiko Takahashi and was uploaded, cleaned, and edited by Starks of Freelance. That I take no credit for.

I know not everyone follows Inuyasha, but I do and Sesshomaru is pretty. And he is good for your eyes XD.
