hey, well i love the manga, in fact it's one of my favorites...
and about classical music, when i was little, i used to listen to that kind of music, since i love ballet as well...
but i drop ballet, and stopped listenin to that kind of music and to tell
the true i don't remember of what i learned back then...:p

but last year i took a classical music class at my college, and i really enjoy it ...i think Beethoven's Fur Elise it's a master piece:thumbup:
n Lacrimosa by Mozart it's my favorite although it's a Requiem:o

I just started reading this after watching the anime series. It's great to be able to continue with the story!

I noticed something on page 27 of chapter 55, when they're watching fireworks, Nodame yells "Tamaya!". It's translated as "palace", but it's actually the name of a famous fireworks company from the 1800s. There were two rival fireworks companies, Tamaya and Kagiya, that used to have a competition every year. The spectators would shout "Kagiya" or "Tamaya" in appreciation of particularly spectacular fireworks.

From http://park.org/Japan/Hitachi/nippon/hanabi/e/ghrj0200.htm:

Even today in Japan, during a fireworks display, you hear people shout Tamaya!... Kagiya! These are the family names of two famous pyrotechnicians who played a major role in the development of fireworks in Japan. Yahei Kagiya set off 20 bursts during the first Ryogoku river festival in 1733. They were so spectacular that he became famous all over old Edo, and the festival became an event that people looked forward to all year. Originally an apprentice to Kagiya, Tamaya began competing with Kagiya in 1810. From this time on, there was a yearly competition between the two, with Tamaya setting off fireworks from an upstream boat, while Kagiya was in a boat some distance downstream. Tamaya caused a fire in 1843 which burned a substantial part of the city, and was expelled from the city. Although the competition between the two men only lasted 32 years, the names are still used by people today to express their thrill at seeing a spectacular fireworks display.

I have just finished watching this fabulous anime on theanimelist.com *plug* and adored it - esp the ending!
It's great to see that the manga continues where the anime left off (even though the anime ending was perfect). Now I'm really keen to see how the story progresses

Now I understand why no one was posting on this thread - I have been reading the manga from the point where the anime finished and it is REALLY DISAPPOINTING. I am having a real problem with the bitchiness of the female characters and how the main characters have a lack of social courtesy towards one another - ie rude. What appears to be an attempt at comedy comes across as domestic violence.
It's such a shame because I really enjoyed the anime - maybe the humour translates better in that format.

I hope that they make a season two anime for this manga..... Its much easier to understand the musich as being good or bad that way. Even though I've played a few instruments in my life (Piano and violin being 2 of those) Its still hard to grasp the concept of "Music" on paper (or screen in this case :D )

I was a violin and guitar player, and one aspect I love from nodame cantabile is the classical piece that they performed. My favorites songs are those piano sonatas... ex:
Rachmaninoff 2nd piano concerto, tchaikovsky 1st piano concerto, mozart piano concerto for 2 piano, Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu Op.557, Beethoven Moonlight Sonata, Listz - Hungarian Rhapsody no 2, Pachelbel Canon in D and much more :D. I believe some of the songs were performed on the anime or dorama. It always melt my heart when I hear those songs...

Classic music live forever!

I think this manga would be difficult to follow if you didn't know what the pieces of music they are talking about sound like. I like to look up stuff on youtube after reading the chapter.

About the story, though... how do you like the Paris arc so far? I'm glad it didn't end where the live action ended, but I don't quite feel the spark between Nodame and Chiaki anymore. I understand that they're both busy focusing on their own musical careers, but I hope they spend more time with each other soon.

im a real fan of classical music....
Since my parents made me play the piano & clarinet since i was 7... until now.....
And i really love this manga...but the drawing style really bothers me....but i think its ok...
but i really love the live action adaptation of this one...
i wish they would continue it..

Initially, I thought the way Nodame was drawn was, well, kind of ugly. But I like the art a lot now. It's very clean and direct, but still delicate. The clothes are all really cute, too. It makes me fantasize about a world where girls wear day dresses to school, rather than t-shirts and jeans.

reading the last chapter I get the feeling that those both will go apart in some way. I don't like the idea. Wonder how it will go on.
I would like it if they would make some process in their relationship if you can call it one. ;)
The style is really good when you get used to the drawings. I'm loving this story. Hope that it will get soon updated again!

Nope, it's not over yet. :)

The live action ended at the point where Nodame decided to play the piano seriously, and she and Chiaki are accepted to study abroad in Paris. The current storyline is that Nodame is attending the Paris conservatory, and Chiaki is working as the permanent conductor of a struggling Parisian orchestra.

The last two pages of the chapter 106 (Nodame's saloon performance) in which she went home alone really made my heart reach out for her. Eventhough Chiaki did mean to go at first, going off with Viera and missing her performance is just.......Hope she teaches him a lesson:devil: Though her bonding time with the butler was hilarious...it cracked me up the whole time:lol:

I just read this manga and it gives me this pleasure feeling every time toward the end of every chapter. Unlike other love-related manga I've read that sometime only funny and sometimes really frustrated. May be because it's music related but I'm sure the other thing would be the character of Nodame herself.

One thing I wonder though. At which point did they really become lovers? I think Chiaki cared about her but he didn't truely accept it. And all the sudden he called Nodame as his girlfriend?

June

I think they become lovers after Chiaki kissed Nodame. After this kiss he finally accepted Nodame and recognized his own feelings for her:-)

I started listening to classical music thanks to this manga. I play the piano, and everytime a new chapter comes, it really boosts my practicing. I also try to find and listen to the pieces they play in the manga, but it doesn't really bother me, not being able to hear them. I think the feel of music is very well expressed in the drawings. And I love the characters and the humor of this manga. Chiaki's and Nodame's relationship is the best, although there are times when I worry for them. But it was great to see Nodame boss Chiaki and make him jealous in chapter 107 :D

ah, it is good to be young, personally, nodame is depressing me as I wont have any opportunity to study piano more seriously. and I played or play almost all the musics she played... the real life level of music competitions and such is much higher than those of the manga.

On a side note, the food metaphor that Auclair sensei is used by my teacher too!! maybe its a thing from those who studied in France

I was worried that Chiaki was going to out of the picture for awhile, but luckily it seems to have been just a short trip to Italy.

Mine really spices this manga up. He's even funnier than Nodame. I hope we can see Masumi again, too. His chocolates are awesome ("Chi, aki, sama, I like you, a lot, a lot, a lot").

Maybe it's just me, but Nodame's Tokyo friends seem more fun than her Paris friends. Everyone in Paris is fairly normal, and Nodame is the sole alien.

everyone besides nodame become odd...

waterbride

True, the only normal one is possibly Kuroki, but his samurai stoicism is definitely not normal, and he turns into such a baby when it comes to Tanya.

June
04-02-2008, 08:56 AM
I don't think her Paris friends are normal. They are also weirdos:P
But you are right her Tokyo friends are funnier:)

Do you think Tanya and Yun Long will really return to their country? Nodame will get lonely without them around...since Chiaki hasn't that much time to spend with her.

waterbride
04-20-2008, 09:23 AM
Kuroki finally admits his true... oh wait, no, still a baby. Well, now it looks like Tanya at least will be staying. Yun Long wasn't really an important character, but I still liked him; I empathized with his relative mediocrity. Maybe he'll end up moving in with Kuroki as well.

On a different note, I had an "omg I really am a Nodame fangirl" moment in real life. I was at a Ravel and Saint-Saens concert, conducted by Charles Dutoit, when I thought for a split second about the current Paris arc, and how people are often moved to tears in this manga when they're listening to a performance, but in real life it's really difficult to move an audience. Then I asked myself, Why am I thinking about manga at this amazing concert?, and life returned to normal...

June
04-21-2008, 07:57 PM
yup, Yun Long isn't an important character, but he's in his way quite funny. I like the parts where he spends time with Chiaki:)
the Tanya-Kuroki-relationship (if there exist one...) is quite weird. I just don't get them:p

Sometimes it's nice to have a "omg I'm a fangirl" moment;)

waterbride
05-05-2008, 03:02 AM
Her teacher calls her Baby because he thinks that she still has a ways to go to become a mature musician. I think that while he likes her current way of playing, he sees something bigger in her, so he hopes that she'll develop her full potential as a musician over the long term. If she played in a competition in her current state, she would probably win, but she could burn out too quickly. Like Chiaki worried, she could become satisfied with how she could play right now, just as she used to be satisfied with becoming a preschool music teacher. Also, remember when Nodame competed in Japan, Auclair was the only one who noticed that she wasn't interpreting the Debussy piece with the composer's intent in mind; she was too caught up in her own romantic feelings for Chiaki, and how she desparately needed to win so that she wouldn't be separated from him. When Nodame plays technical pieces with the thought of competing, she forgets to enjoy music and becomes a zombie, such as when her rival from childhood showed up, and when she saw Rui playing all those Rachmaninoff war-horses. Auclair seems to be protecting Nodame from the pressure of competing so that she can "face the music head on," as Milky (dammit, now I've forgotten his real name :p) used to tell her. However, I think that Auclair is still preparing her for her debut, and that time is coming near because the pieces that he assigned to Nodame look like important, musically advanced pieces...

I agree with waterbride. Auclair is trying to develop her full potential. She should learn to understand the composers intention and not only interpret her own thoughts in the pieces she plays. With playing a wide variety of pieces of different composers will let her have a greater knowledge of classical music. He also doesn't want her to take a certain musical direction yet because it could be a waste for her other hidden ability/talent. Though I think, he should have explained Nodame clearer why he doesn't want her to take part in a competition. Nodame is now quite confused... Hope Chiaki will understand what Auclair-senseis intentions are.

i like the manga but sometimes the storyline is so dragging.
i like how they plain why classical music is supposed to be played perfectly and according to the score.nodame and mine kinda balances it out. improvisation is also an important part of music otherwise music would be robotic.

One of the things I liked about watching the live action was hearing the music. The manga doesn't have sound effects, so I thought I'd provide some...

The piece that Nodame wants to play with Chiaki,
Ravel Piano Concerto in G Major

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftJ-gJ-l5HQ&feature=related (movt 2)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySKtp9Pt6JM&feature=related (movt 3)

The pieces that Auclair-sensei has assigned to Nodame,
1) Chopin Piano Sonata No. 3 in B Minor, Op. 58
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FriX09tJYMA&feature=related

2) Beethoven Piano Sonata No. 31 in A Flat Major, Op. 110

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0FSNwyHYTI&feature=related (movts 3 & 4)

Chapter 117 looks like the start of something exciting. I always want to clap when Chiaki stops acting like a middle-aged man and does something spontaneous, i.e. because of Nodame!

Yes yes! I loved the music in the anime. ♥♥

That couldn't be conveyed in the manga. But still, it was great. I'm no music student, so I didn't really know if Nodame was playing well or not. But I thought she played well when they said she was playing 'badly' ;;.

Now I want Nodame's bag... But it's so expensive on ebay. D: . The bag came free with one of the CDs or something. When they sell it separately... D: . Ya know? I want the mongoose doll as well. ♥

Waterbride, thanks for the links!:eban:
Most of the time I'm too lazy to search for the music pieces:p

I didn't expect Chiaki to refuse the offer because of Nodame. Now he can stay by her side and Nodame's wish to play Ravel with him isn't destroyed.

I just read 118 and thought it was really sweet. Chiaki goes overboard in helping Nodame who is grateful at first but resentful at the end.

I have to say that the series isn't as fun as it was in earlier chapters. There was some interesting music theory in this chapter, but there seems to be a lack of anything other than music and romance in the later chapters (though I am enjoying Chiaki and Nodame's romance). In the beginning there were pranks and Gokon (sp?) and other slices of life in Japan. In the middle was the intro to France and the Mozart castle.

The characters in France don't feel quite as real as the characters in Japan. There is no French equivalent to Mine, no pranks, and even Stresemann, who could liven things up in a European setting, has faded out of the picture.

I've read that there is a real Nodame that the story is loosely based on. I wonder if the real Nodame stayed in Japan and became a Kindergarden teacher? You just can't make up things like the Fart Song, and stealing food from friends has the ring of "this really happened" to it. Perhaps that's why there's not as much fun in the French chapters, there's not a real person involved anymore.

Just some thoughts. I do really like this series, both the manga, the anime and the live action. I understand/sympathize with the live action the best so far. I happily consume any Nodame creations and look forward to season 2 of the Anime and of course, the manga chapters as they're translated.

Ahh, me too! Can't wait till Nodame Canatbile season 2 is out! <3. Hope the OP and ED are just as kewl as season 1. And well, I'd like to see what they had in the ED of the last ep in season 1 as an episode (where Chiaki goes over to Nodame's parents' place <3 ) ;;.

Chapter 118 was cute~ And yeah, I'll have to agree with you dzoey, on 'the series isn't as fun as it was'. It primarily focuses on music now(that isn't a bad thing at all), and the minority goes towards love. Though, this chapter brought the love a step up <3 Chiaki deserves a pat on the back! : P I wanna see moar now xD;;

but it also its true that its not as fun as in early chapter but i believe things going to heat up. and importantly more chiaki and nodame..(if i what im thinking where storylines going to be is right)

looking back previous few chapter its quite boring. chapter 119 seems to be more romance development between tanya and kuroki. yun long seems to be forgotten and what about mine with his rising star orchestra. i really want to see katahirasan and his jumping conducting act.

I loved the intimate moment of Nodame and Chiaki in chapter 118! Chiaki seems to care for Nodame finally, not like the earlier chapters where he abandoned her concert for his sensei (forgot his name...something with V...).
It was kind of fun as she compared them to rabbit and turtoise:) It just mean that she got the feeling that Chiaki is improving his ability and going further away, letting Nodame behind...

Chapter 119: I don't have much to say to this chapter. Nodame is very busy with her studies, she even forgot Chiaki's concert. I hope they won't have problems in their relationship later on. Only one thing I don't really get. here http://www.onemanga.com/Nodame_Cantabile/119/14/ Is Chiaki thinking this? What is he running away of? Kind mysterious...

Yeah, i agree you all that its not so funny as before. its because Nodame has became more mature. she is not childish and crazy as before, i think.

I wonder what the forewords in chapter 119 means:
" It was harsh, it was moving, but the time of happiness has
knocking at the door, and, the two's voyage is ending. "

Is that a hint that we are begin to go to the end of this manga?? or does it means that somethings new is coming, something nice?
I quite dont understand.... what you guys think?

I think it is Chiaki's thought bubble, but that part was mysterious for me, too. Maybe he thinks he is getting farther out of Nodame's reach as he moves ahead, since he is performing the piece that Nodame wants to play with him with another pianist.

The title page says, "Nodame... an even happier tune... Cantabile," so I think that something good and new is coming, like the start of Nodame and Chiaki's successful and happy adult lives. Soon Nodame won't have to chase after Chiaki, and they'll be together as equals. Of course, that's bittersweet news for us, because that sounds like the end of the manga. It does make sense, though, in terms of chapter numbers -- chapter 52 was the end of the Japan arc; now we're on chapter 119, which makes the Paris arc even longer than the first arc.

It does make sense, though, in terms of chapter numbers -- chapter 52 was the end of the Japan arc; now we're on chapter 119, which makes the Paris arc longer than the first.

I really like the current chapter just out. It has all the qualities I like about this manga and minimal crazy violence. I think the manga is coming to a close - I have a feeling this will be the last arc - but you never know.
I don't know how the manga will end but I both fear and hope that Rui will have to miss the performance at the last minute and Nodame has to play in her stead. Fear: because this is a bit of a cliche and it could ruin the lovely randomness of things that I love so much in this manga. Hope: because it really would be a beautiful ending to the manga in the way that Chiaki embraced Nodame at the end of the first arc.
