MSN: project for translating MSN

The franky house lost its translator for MSN or quit on it.
So we don't have any more fast translation for it.
So in the other thread we are thinking for translating it our selves.
OR we could wait until next week for AQS translation.
It will be just a fast sub like franky house the quality
wouldn't be too extreme it just for fun.We could drop it if
their will be a continuation of release by franky house but for
now. What do you think guys?

I can clean or typeset for it. :thumbup: well not good in typeset
and cleaning. Don't have any good exp for typeset but

There's no harm in trying. If we try and fail, we learn and get better, when the official release comes out we can use it as a reference.

yes thats true and its a for fun project. Its not bad to fail at first and all it will eventually become good.

And it looks like their are cleaners volunteering but the needed translator are none.
It will be good if someone that knows the language first hand helps to improve translating.

That's what I'm saying. If FH needs a translator then apply there. If they need a cleaner then apply there. They CAN teach you there so why make your own independent work when they can do it much better.

Thanks, but it's mostly due to the word processor. I'm still trying to memorize katakana, a few hundred kanji, dipthongs and word order. By doing this I get experience and training. I also learn from my mistakes.

Well you personally said you had experience in cleaning (as typed in the first page) so it comes within reason that a new guy with no experience cleans better than the one that has one. Like I said, in this topic you made there are two translators willing to do it. It's much easier to give the translation to a better group (Binktopia, Franky-House, scanlators in Mangahelpers, even Mahou-X) and let them deal with the cleaning.

Twi, the goal is basically to get it looking as good as possible. I'm far from an expert, but here's the basics. You add correctional layers to increase the contrast- you make the black more black and the white more white. But you don't want to overdo it, or it'll look really bad. Correctional layers are either levels or curves in photoshop. Then you make new layers, apply image, and use dodge and burn to correct colors- burn at places which are gray but should be black, dodge at places that are light gray but should be white. Don't overdue it, have your burn set to shadows and your dodge to highlights. Use the sharpen and blur tools as needed. In certain situations, you can use the paintbrush to make something more bright or dark. Remember that selection tools are your friend- to 'smart burn' you might polygonal lasso an area and then go crazy. Also, the magic wand tool is good for grabbing areas of the same color to modify, and the magic eraser if you make an area that should be white gray. That's not a comprehensive overview, merely the basics- people who know what they're doing have wrote guides on it.

Well, since this is for fun project - I did one page here, to be exact this is page 6. No English text there - I just cleaned up, did filtered and denoised and fix up a little. Maybe not the best job I've done at this hour but here it is.

I do have manga fonts in file but...as it is, I can't read Japanese so if someone could do this page for me - I'd be happy to put English test in there.

Oh, and also to make the translation work out. Do that like script plays...you know the way actors use in practice? An example like this:

Page one:
panel one:
Negi: Hello, what's you doing?
Asura: Nothing, I'm just playing a game...
SFX effects: (game sounds)
Negi: Oh... I see, can I join in?

That script can go on panel to panel, page to page. That's how most translators do that way from what I see. Some of you here don't have to do whole - maybe do one page then let someone practice with their font typeset.

The redrawing is drawing the whole models again.. I think making it black like the release
of AQS the linings are black.

release. Like in AQS release. In their release you can see trace of blocks in it. But
I can do only is paint through it... though its quite different from the others...

Top panel negi's face is a bit too dark, the one beneath it the background can use a bit of a burn and maybe a sharpen, the big eva can use the gray to be more solidified, and the one with negi's face just looks very incomplete.

Altogether a much better job though- it shows dramatic improvement over last time.

I understand the effort and meaning behind all this, but why not just apply for a position on either FH or AQS? At least there, you will probably be able to get some training/tips/help and also help them get faster releases.

But if you guys still decide to keep it a pet project, I'll give you some pointers.

First off, the scans are wayy to dark. The best way to get results is to use either curves or level manually. Ctrl-L for level Ctrl-M for curves. I suggest levelling. When levelling, you'll notice that a graph-like thing will pop up. A easy way to get decent results that aren't too dark or too light is to adjust the triangle tabs on the very left and the very right under the graph. Moving the left tab to the right will make the scan darker, while moving the right tab to the left will make the scan lighter. The best results are found when the tabs are generally pointing to the region in which the graph ends its steep slope (if you dont get it now, you'll get it when you actually try it out with Photoshop). After that, fine tune it by either moving the tabs or entering the numbers by 1 or 2. If the scan is particularly bad, such as bands of light and dark, use the burn tool, set to midtones and 10-30% exposure, and apply till you get a uniformity on the entire scan.

Lastly, you will want to crop, rotate, and resize the raw to something manageable.
I prefer to rotate first, so create a copy of the background (original scan) and in the new layer background copy, hit ctrl-T and adjust till you think the scan is straight. For reference, use titles, panel lines, text, or hit ctrl -R, click on the white ruler right above or to the left and drag out a guide line. Rotate and your done.
Use the crop tool and crop out anything that isn't part of the scan. When done, all that should be left is what matters; no white strip on the sides, top bottom, or "gutter" caused by the binding of the magazine.
Resize to an appropriate size, which IMO is 1600ish give or take 100.

For typesetting (text over scan), its all about preference and beauty. Use w/e font floats your boat, and try to make it "fit" into the bubbles. Try and to have any of this:

Try to connect. Sometimes its unavoidable, but in my experience, it is very very rare. Manually add spaces if needed to correct it.
On text without bubbles, you will probably need to add a 2-pixel feather of WHITE so that it can be read. Create the text, and right click the text layer -> blending options ->stroke : 2 pixels, white.

And rebuilding would be too complicated to discuss here, but feel free to pm with any questions.

And yeah, Tsunade, you're way too dark. Overburn isn't good either... use the magic wand + a paintbrush to restore white.

Basically, on those two it looks like you didn't do enough. Overburning is when you burn so much that the white gets too dark, it can be avoided by only burning in specific areas, and using the dodge tool too.

I always use burn. Thats what greg suggest. But I just over burn stuff.
First I use the selection too. Then select the not needed part then use color dodge to
clean it white after that just burn it. The important ones I often double layer it or
3 times burn. but I think its too dark.... I still need to learn more. And the
curve and level they say is useful.
