Spoilers
Who other then me hated the ending I cant believe she fell for a stupid robot instead of a real person.I was annoyed while she was with night and liked reading the parts where I thought she would come to her senses with Asamato but nope she just had to pick the dang robot. I dont think I can read another romance manga out of all the ones i have read and Ive only read one other one this one has the most disappointing ending because she fell for a stupid robot. The other one i read was Ichigo100% and although I didnt like who Manaka ended up with it didnt bother me as much as this mangas ending omg ill never come to terms with it lol.

That not kind that bad. I think that cool, some kind of new Romance series, right?
Yeah,Night is a robot, but maybe not stupid, He try to learn about the woman. He has a feeling too. Dont u think that right?

Robots just cant feel anything ,even though it is a manga how could a machine feel anything it annoys me that she would pick a machine over a real person. Asamato should have just left her and not come back at the end then maybe I would have been happier. If i was him I would be so pissed that she would pick a machine over a person to be with its so dum. but of course she did make Night to her liking so whatever suits her best I thought he was just an annoying machine throughtout the whole series only read it to see when she would get with her human friend and quit being stupid but shes to dum to know that a person is better then a robot . This is my least favorite ending of all time no joke just because the concept of someone picking a machine over a person that has feelings really bothered me. Sure you could say Night really felt all that stuff but its still a machine just not the same as a human which bothered me so bad.

I liked that she choosed the robot but it was nice of night to contact Asamato but i had tthe foolish idea that the robot would have an unlimited lifespan or some dumb futuristic way turned human

i thought the ending was disappointing actually...the unhappy ending may be unusual for mangas, but for books and movies it is a cliche. So it didnt really hit a thread for me where it should have..
The ending's not bad actually.
I'm not someone who cries easily but whoa, tears were welling up throughout the last few chapters LOL

i thought the ending made sense, but just disheartened that the ideal guy for her couldnt be with her. i definitely liked Night for her, we werent really shown of just how Soushi and Riiko would be together so yeah hmmm.. dis is prolly of the best shojo i've read. and the first i've finished.

Why is everyone against Night? I'd have picked him too. So what he's not human. Big whoop. I found Asamoto to be kinda condescending where as Night did everything he could to be the best boyfriend for Riiko.
The ending was so sad. It wasn't my least favorite character death by far (Edward Cantor Dean still ranks in as #1), but it was sad none the less.

I really don't care. I like how this manga was starting but it got worse and the ending just ruined the whole thing. It was just kind of stupid in general.....and did Riko ever think, "Wait a minute.......Im in love with a robot?"

I thought the whole plot was her thinking "he's a robot" all the time...
I enjoyed the manga and I did cry at the end. Night became more than a robot for Riiko. Emotionally he wasn't a robot at all. I was glad she chose him. I just wish the ending wasn't so sad. :(
On the bright side I'm glad Gaku found his true calling! ;)

I agree. Soushi may have been a better match for her (and you can't forget history) but love is very much about timing and Night definitely became her anchor in a time when she was very vulnerable. I'm glad it ended the way it did and though they may end up together I don't think Riiko and Soushi will be gettin' together anytime soon, if at all.
My thoughts: I'm definitely a sucker for these silly love mangas. Never are there characters that are more perfect, or perfectly flawed...then in these stories. I always become immersed in them. Absolute boyfriend was definitely a good one, and I'm glad it was as short as it was as well. No need to unnecessarily stretch things out.

Yeah i'm glad the mangaka didn't try to make it any longer, the length was good for the storyline.
I don't think Soushi will be with Riiko later in life though. At the end it shows her with hope that in the future technology may be able to fix Night. She'll probably hold out with that hope....

My sentiments exactly. It had that bittersweet type of ending. Afterall, it was Reiko's first love...and to loose him like that, it was heartbreaking. Granted he was a sophisticated android but at least Night had a taste of being human. Otherwise, he wouldn't have broken out of his mode...his program to be just a sex toy for the buyer. Trying to decide between two great guys is difficult. It was a 50/50 in either direction. In this case, Soushi was too late in confessing his love for her and so Night won out. Like Mazer8 said, timing is essential in this romance. Sniff...(I like both of them so it didn't matter which one she ended up but still...makes me sad for the other).

Yeah I agree. They were both great guys that could make Reiko happy. I also think that it was nice they left it open for Night to be fixed, but since the likelihood of it happening isn't for a period of years...I hope it doesn't because of the whole aging issue. I think it sort of left room for fanfics and that's about it lol.

Here's a few suggestions (some of my favorites)...that are listed here in OM:
Fall in Love Like a Comic
Full Moon wo Saga****e (complete)
Hana Kimi (complete)
High School Debut
Imadoki (complete)
Land of the Blindfold (complete)
Meru Puri (complete)
Vampire Knight
Hope it helps you get started. There's lots more to choose from but hopefully this is some that would perk your interest.

Yes...go for Meru Puri or even better...Vampire knight....they are both good. Anyways, this conversation has strayed away from the point of this thread. So to get back on track, I personally thought the ending was lacking. Like seriously....Would you choose a robot whom you have known for a few months over a human who's been your best friend since childhood? Sure love works in mysterious ways but that's ridiculous....

Sure the ending seemed kind of weak...but how can you help but love the story? I cried at the end.
Yeah...yeah. I know he's an adroid. But ask yourself this...when you were at your most vulnerable, did you turned and attached yourself to someone who made themselves available...?? I think Reiko may have suffered a case of the "Nightingale" syndrome (person who falls in love of the one taking care of them...in this case, Reiko's broken heart to Night's comfort and availability). Also, Soushi may have been her childhood friend but he didn't make it known his true feelings for her. The signals that Reiko was getting from him was one of a big brother. So how can a girl see him more than that...?? Again, it's the timing of the situation...the "what if" thought.
Ridiculous or not...I think there may be a lesson to be learned here..."Don't wait for something to happen but make it happen. Otherwise, it be too late."
If it was real...of course, I would choose the real McCoy...but then again, some guys are robots so what's the difference...?? Heh heh!!!

I would have picked Night anyday even over my own husband. He was always there to rescue her, and didn't make fun of her the way Asamoto did. Too little too late, the saying goes. I cried my eyes out during this manga. I read it twice to understand the meaning. I wish there was a part 2 somewhere. I hope the robot wakes up before she becomes an old maid. Are there any good romance mangas like this out there, besides ouran host club?

The robot was completely in love with her.. but yeah, it was a robot. They still suited though.
Funny how she's dying for a guy and then once she gets one (ordered) they all start popping out, wanting her.
I can criticize it a lot but I have to say I did like it. The ending was seriously messed... It just ruined the flow of the whole manga entirely... It made me think that I shouldn't have read it in the first place. >.>" Such a let down.

[Warning: LOOONG. I talk too much, but I felt I had a point.]
Well, I'm familiar with Yuu Watase's because of Fushigi Yugi and Ayashi no Ceres (anime versions for both, although I've only read a bit of the Ayashi scanlations here) so I knew how this would turn out, but I still felt, at the end of this, that she'd made a mistake.
Take a look at chapter 4, page 4, and tell me that list doesn't describe Soushi, with maybe the exception of 'a little perverted' (manga suggests he isn't, or he loves her so much he doesn't dare). The 'preemptive reflexes' and 'a strong fighter!' bit are also debatable, I suppose, since we've seen very little evidence except his punching the guy who rejected her and the comment that he was the only one who could consider rivalling Night (late in the series, but I forget where). I actually shook my head when she remembered Night discarded peppers when she said she didn't like them, since Soushi wants her to eat them for her own good (reference "Manly (will scold me when I need it)"). She even listed her ideal boyfriend's specialty to be cooking--and isn't that one of the main things Soushi does for her? Though she didn't realize it, Soushi was everything she wanted. What screwed him over was that he was too shy to approach her and was too worried about what was good for her.
I thought she was an absolute idiot when she chose Night, honestly. Though nice and sweet with impressive capabilities (due to being a robot, mind, and from the future, no less), it was just a 'cute' relationship. She's not terribly mature, and maybe she chose Night because he matches that--he beats Soushi in the 'naive' department. Though he made fun of her often, he's definitely more mature. Night could beat Soushi physically and academically, and he didn't have any aims but to please Riiko, but he didn't impress me terribly. Why? Night was programmed to be every one of these things. A computer can calculate faster than any human, and store tons of information, and the future gimmick helped smooth it over even more. He was created to please women. Soushi is a living, breathing creature who had to work hard for everything(well, maybe not his looks), has other obligations and needs, and STILL cares for Riiko that way.
If he weren't completely in love with her, I'd say Soushi deserves better. He was too scared to say anything, and covered his feelings up by teasing her, but can you truly blame him? Fear is human. He's at fault for not saying anything, but I can't help but resent her a little for never noticing. She must not have ever really paid him that much attention. Remember when they start working together? She doesn't even realize it's him for a moment. It's not like he's gone for a star makeover--he's just taken off his glasses. It's not a huge difference, and she's been with him so long she should practically know him by smell. And I hate, hate, hate how when she finally decides, she says that Night's the one how's been by her through all the bad times. Nearly all of the 'bad times' she had after Night's arrival were a direct result of his being there in the first place, and even then, sometimes Soushi was the one to comfort and help her. That's, you know, not counting all those years beforehand.
*sigh* Riiko seems a bit shallow. Chapter 10, page 18, she says 'the feel is totally different,' regarding Soushi in contacts. (Provided Soushi -is- attractive, glasses or no, although I think I only started thinking that after a while when I thought Riiko should go with him...chapter four or five, I think).
I'm actually considering writing a fanfic where Riiko realizes all this, although chances are slim since my muse is wilting in a corner. I don't know, Night's alright in terms of a character, and I don't hate him or anything, but I think Soushi seriously gets mistreated and Riiko's crazy for shunting him to the side. Night fans are free to argue it, but I think I have a pretty good basis for argument here. [/longrant]

The ending to Absolute Boyfriend made me cry a lot. It's one of the best mangas I've ever read in it's entirety. Well, it's the only one. The ending was great even though she chose Night over her childhood best friend. Man, I wish I could get attention like that! :3

A boyfriend as good as Night will never exsist! D=< NEVER!! I finished the whole thing in one day...
well... I'm kinda used to this kind of ending so I didn't really cry, but it's still kinda disturbing for me. Riiko would be waiting for the rest of her life for Night to wake up! Way to waste your life on a robot! By the time Night wakes she'll be a pile of bones or ashes.
They conquered all those difficulties and can't be together in the end >< That's just too sad. I can't get why Riiko could be able to smile in the end x.x If it was me I'd be nearing the point of suicide.
Not that I don't feel sorry for Soushi, but I didn't think he stood a chance to begin with. =\

I agree with you Soushi never stood a chance. They would probably have been the perfect couple ShoushixRiiko but he didn't make his move... It's all about the timing people. :p
I thought there was a chance that Night could become human... but they never said it was impossible. /end of soppy mode.
Riiko's an idiot.. She didn't deserve any of them. She should have chose one and dealt with the consequence instead of leading them both on but that would've shortened the manga entirely.. >.>

I would like to think that Riiko was thinking these thoughts when she had that bittersweet smile at the end...
Splendour in the Grass
What though the radiance
which was once so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass,
of glory in the flower,
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind;
In the primal sympathy
Which having been must ever be;
In the soothing thoughts that spring
Out of human suffering;
In the faith that looks through death,
In years that bring the philosophic mind.
-- William Wordsworth
This happens to be one of my favorite poems. There's an old film with Natalie Woods and Warren Beatty titled Splendour in the Grass...awesome movie. It had that same theme-like undertones...only the girl was obsessed with the guy more so than him with her...and the ending is a killer kleenix moment.
...I thought there was a chance that Night could become human... but they never said it was impossible. /end of soppy mode. Riiko's an idiot.. She didn't deserve any of them. She should have chose one and dealt with the consequence instead of leading them both on but that would've shortened the manga entirely.. >.>
I thought so too. I wanted to see Night become human. And Riiko being an idiot and leading them on...I couldn't agree with you more. I guess she wanted to have both the icing and the cake, huh...?? Pretty greedy, don't you think...?? What a pig. :p

Actually, I did think that they'd do the Night turning human thing when he started malfunctioning, so to speak. I mean, while computer programs can easily misbehave, they don't develop minds of their own (even if they may act like it). And I think she should've chosen earlier on, realistically, although it WOULD make the manga rather short...but i can also understand her indecision. That's pretty real, too. Most of you have probably met people in that sort of indecision, one way or another. Also, my first series from this author was Fushigi Yugi, so I thought she might try to pull off another impossible "anything to be with you" stunt at the end, like them being able to biologically engineer a human and insert his mind into said being. If they're able to make a robot that actually looks and feels completely like a human, can eat, etc, it's not really a big leap in logic.
And hmm, for "Timing is everything"...I don't quite agree. It does make stuff harder, but at the level she was at, I don't think so, especially in our society these days. People go together, people break up, but even marriage isn't a guarantee anymore, for better or worse. I'm not saying Soushi ever stood a chance in terms of how this manga was written (Obvious from the start who she'd end up with), but I always thought he should have. I do half-want her to be alone, though, for all that awful behavoir she showed in the manga. She doesn't even come close to deserving Soushi, and if they did end up together in the aftermath, she'd seriously need to grow up and appreciate him. Poor, stupid guy, for falling for her...but we all do stupid stuff like that all the time.

I based it all on the manga.. >.< The timing was everything.. Soushi only 'confessed' to her when he found out about Night yet he knew all along that she had been refused by a few guys before him. He should have made his move before Night came along, or should I say was ordered- you know things would've ended differently, without Night and the heart break etc.
I know people are indecisive but it was quite obvious throughout that Riiko preferred Night to Soushi. She wasn't attracted to him until he took off his glasses, Superman style.. >.>
When Night was really starting to feel for her, he did mention to the sales guy (dammit forgot his name) that he wanted to become more human via collecting emotions through the ring. In that brief conversation, I thought it might have been possible for him to somehow turn human. After all even though it's a 'machine' they're very developed to even create senses etc. So that option doesn't seem entirely unrealistic in the manga.

It was definitely obvious that she preferred Night to Soushi, and that she didn't even consider it until he pulled that "Superman style" stunt (good reference!). *grin* I actually like his looks with or without the glasses, mind.
The ohcrapsomeonewilltakeher thing happens more often than not, though. Marmalade Boy comes to mind immediately, a billion other mangas, and just about any soap opera or drama....

First of all, Yuu Watase is not my favorite mangaka, but I really like this work of her. It's too much than what I expect from her mangas. It makes me cry like crazy in the end
In the beginning, it's a lot of fun stuff through the weird plot of love between human and machine Yeah, Riiko is such a lucky girl when she has two perfect guys love her. Soshi is kinda nice and good-looking, but I, just like Riiko, prefer Night than him. Night is not only pure and naive like a kid, but also attractive and manly in the same time. Moreover, he is a figure, but loves and sacrifices for her even more than a human. I never thought he's robot during every chapter until the end. I remember I laugh so hard in chapter which he becames tiny and they 3 live in same house. And i was attracted by his cheerful-sometimes-sad eyes.
It's getting tragic in the very end. My heart almost stops whenever Night collages, cuz I know as well, that day will come soon, the day he's at his limit. I feel hurt for him when he trys to cover it up from Riiko and pretends to be normal. And as a result, I cry hardly by the time i reach to the last chapter. I burst into tear when Night says "I love you...forever", and Riiko says"Me too", they kiss, and he closes his eyes that Riiko never knows it'll never open again...It's just like destiny that Riiko kisses Night the first time to wake him up, and last time to make him sleep 4ever. He always wants Riiko to be happy even when he stops breathing. That's why he asks Soshi to come back by her side in the end. I'm a little bit upset cuz I want Night and Riiko be together, but well, it's a great ending, very touching, very real...Yeah, it's a beautiful fairytale, but not too far away from reality like Chobits. It doesn't matter he is a human or figure, they both fell deeply in love with each other, and for me, it means everything
I finished this manga in a whole day, cried for it over a night, and still felt sad until now . Definitely a must-read manga

I just wished it didn't end like it did.
I'm still confused about why he stopped working.. I mean machines now-a-days work for a really long time. And wouldn't there be a way to fix him?? I mean hello! He is from the future..
I just don't think it ended correctly

I started off liking this manga, cause the concept was interesting, ordering your perfect man. But after awhile Riko got annoying. Once she found out Soshi liked her she should of started dating him to see where it went. But instead she wanted to spend 3/4 the series trying to figure out which one she liked. I was happy when Soshi moved away but didn't like how he came back to be her substitute because Night was no longer available.

I have to agree with you. Soushi should have stayed away. I never liked him.. ever.
If she just decided she liked Night in the middle of the series.. their relationship would've been better.. I bet

The majority of the the readers would prefer Night to Soushi... Not because Soushi wasn't good enough but because the mangake purposely focused on Night to be the 'hero' figure in the story.
Soushi's character can not possibly compete with that much focus and likability of Night's perfect boyfriend material.

yeah...somewhere along that. Typicall of Yuu Watase
but in the end, she did end up with soushi.... because night contacted him and told him to take care of riiko... so it did end up the way it should have...
but she still chose night... stupid girl
I really like this manga.. It's romantic..Night was really good 2 her.. I don't think she's stupid at all. In love it's not your brain that makes a choise of who 2 love.. It's your heart..
I hoped just like skipbeat that Night would somehow turn into a human...
I liked that she choosed the robot but it was nice of night to contact Asamato but i had tthe foolish idea that the robot would have an unlimited lifespan or some dumb futuristic way turned human

I have to agree that it's a bit of a shock for someone who had seen one of Watase's epic works and didn't know she had such variations in style. Personally I watched Fushigi Yugi first, then Ayashi, and finally read Zettai Kareshi. FY was very much your typical this-magical-world-ATE-me story, and Ayashi is very similar in essence, with supernatural tendrils permeating the world we know, and eventually all but taking over. Zettai Kareshi tosses this concept on its head, tossing a supernatural (well, sci-fi) element into our world and watching it play on him.
At the risk of sounding like a Lit Analysis class, though, there is a common element, at least in the Watase works I've seen. As much as she likes variation, her stories always play heavily on the human condition, and act as a coming-of-age. On the former, Ayashi is a more obvious case, but Fushigi Yugi delves pretty deeply into things like strains such as rivalry and on deep friendships, faith in yourself and others, and self-destructive behavior. For the latter, it's fairly easy to see the qualifications of both of them. ZT, however, might be a little harder to pick out. The main issue of the story--Ri's inexperience with coupled with her desire for a boyfriend--is common, and her shameless desperation might even be seen as juvenile. She becomes more experienced (no pun intended) by the end of it, but it's strongly questionable whether she's more mature by the end of it. Personally, I don't feel she was any wiser, just less desperate since she'd been sated, in a sense.
Cutting this off before someone complains about lengthy posts again....

I totally agree with you Icesea.
Absolute Boyfriend is definitely a must-read manga.
And your words just described all of it for me. Thank you !
I didn't cry when I reached the last chapter though. But I was laughing a lots through out the whole story. I would say I was going to cry, but I managed to hold my tears in, sat back, and understood that this must be an end for Riiko and Night. Their love and feelings have been always true and existing. Though, they only live in the manga world, Yuu Watase is able to expose them to us. When creating this world, she must have known the ending before hand.
If you believe it's a bad ending, then you go ahead and create a different fantastic ending for it. But it won't be perfect, at least in reality.
I personally understand this ending. It's hurt though. But you can't dream your whole life.
Great job Yuu Watase !
Many fans are by your side. ^.

i thought this was really sweet......night was something that i real guy probably cudnt be. anyways, this manga did make me cry and i hated the ending because he died.....but it was still sweet.
God this manga pissed me off so bad.
She chose a damn robot over soushi. >.>
When i read the ending, i was extremely pissed off. You can assume that even if she ends up with him, shes still going to feel that void in her life and realize that nothing will replace him, and wait for him forever. he could never live up to that!
Which is why i really..hate this mangas ending.
No person is perfect, riiko is a complete fool for choosing the impractical choice. He was custom made, a practical sex and mind slave to her.. stupid.
I was rooting for soushi the whole time, gosh..what a disapointment >.>
If i was him, i'd say.. "you know what..screw you. are you that lonely as to choose a robot over me? i'm out of here!"
he even said that he wanted to grow old with her, and on her list of qualities, he really did match alot of them. poor guy.

Ooooh my god. This was the first complete shojou that I ever read. I got so emotionally invested in the damn thing I can't even begin to tell you. I'm shaking right now just thinking of it. tsktsktsk. breathe. detach. breathe... >.< I still love the mangga don't get me wrong, I'm just bothered that it affected me so much haha. If I hadn't been reading it in an internet cafe I would have bawled my eyes out. As it was I had to stop myself from shaking the guy next to me.
I wasn't very happy with the last 2 chapters since I was a devout Asamoto supporter (he has glasses lol) Knight is really sweet and went through a lot for her and your heart really goes out to him but it pained me to think that she picked the robot (who was perfect sure -but only cuz she "made" him that way- which is rather twisted and artificial when you think about it) over the guy who had been by her side for how many years. And the fact that Asamoto just took this with a smile on his face!! (fake/strained true but still!) Ripped my little heart to shreds that did...
Then theres the whole issue about her having to copulate with Knight before shes his "real" girlfriend. This is something I found disturbing if not rather offensive as well crass and objectionable, I'm sure you understand why. Well and good that knight was a gentleman about the matter but the existance of the condition itself seemed degrading in any case.
And the ending!! >.< I can't beleive he wasted away without telling her. Martyr much??
*pant pant* Theres a lot more I could say about this but it might be rather rude to make this too long so Ill stop here... sorry for the uber long post... told you I got emotionally invested.. -.-;

You know what? I don't really feel sry for Soushi. It was all his fault anyway. Too bad for him. However, I flat out hated Night. He was a tool. Even if he was a human, I wouldn't have liked him any more. If you think about it he's insanely selfish. He knew the entire time that no matter what he wouldn't be able to stay with Riiko. Yet he got in the way and pretty much messed up her life and possible happy future with Soushi just for a little nookie. SELFISH. I hate that guy.

I really have no idea what frustrates people so much about Riiko picking Night over Soushi.. Don't forget that it was Soushi who hurt Riiko's feelings ALL the time at the start of the manga. Night took much better care of her and was actually no different from a regular guy except for the few 'extra's'he got due to being a robot (superhuman strength/speed)/ You can't really say he had any disadvantages except for having trouble understanding Riiko's feelings at first and he actually tried to understand her. Also, I don't count maintenance as a disadvantage since humans get ill as well.
The concept of a human buying a robot as a boyfriend is not as strange as it seems though, we can probably expect this in the future in real life as well.

I dont think I can read another romance manga out of all the ones i have read and Ive only read one other one this one has the most disappointing ending because she fell for a stupid robot. The other one i read was Ichigo100% and although I didnt like who Manaka ended up with it didnt bother me as much as this mangas ending omg ill never come to terms with it lol.
brick wall of text.
Exactly the same! I was really disappointed and decided not to read anymore something from the same author. I found it very stupid, she wanted simply someone, who cares who. A robot? -_-
